PrinceWatercress plays Pokonyan! Henpokorin Adventure - Part 5 of 5

We play through the fifth and final world as well as the final bonus level, then check out and explain the post-game grading system.

World 5-1

The big tree just after the first castle has the star above it.

There are plenty of slopes. Watch out for monsters around them.

The warthogs are back, so don't get charged at.

There are a few pathways in the walls, so pay attention to your surroundings.

World 5-2

The star is on a cloud above the second big castle. Also, watch out for the sword and shield guys so you don't get stunned.

Holding Down and pressing R turns you into a hedgehog. I find this form the least useful of the three due to its slow speed.

World 5-3

There are plenty of places to run around here on both the ground and on the top of the castles.

The star is in the ground after the last five fruits, which are the cherries that are on the stars you can stand on. Stand above it, then hold Down and B to drop down and get it.

The blue fox boss will turn into a fireball that launches at you, a red energy ball that bounces to the other side of the screen, then changes into a sword that charges to the other side of the screen, in that order. The boss can only be damaged in fox form. The final treat is a macaroon.

Bonus World 5

6:14 - Push the upper-left block to the left, then push the block that was below it to the right. Push the upper-right block to the right, and there you go.

6:35 - You can push all of these blocks in the order that you see them. As for the two blocks on the far right, push the bottom one first.

6:56 - After pushing the middle block into the nearby gap, you'll have the five blocks afterwards. You'll need to push the other two blocks around you first. Push the right block to the right, then put the left block on top of the right block.

Now for the set of five blocks. Push the block on the top to the left, and do the same for the middle left block. Push the middle right block to the right, the lower right block to the right, and the lower left block to the right to push the final block. Drop down and head left.

7:50 - Push the lower right block to the left. Push the lower middle block to the left. Push the upper right block all the way to the left, then push the upper left block to the left.

8:19 - The first three blocks can be pushed to the left in the order that you see them. After pushing the middle block left, push the bottom block to the left so you can fill the rest of the game with the top block.

The bottom floor is just fruit, so just get everything and head to the exit.

After this, you'll come back home with all of the snacks, then take a nap. You'll get the credits, then you'll get a final score screen that shows how well you did.

There are five things you are scored on. From top to bottom, the first item is your final score. The second item is how many fruits you picked up in the game, with the max being 1000. The third item is how many times you were hit by enemies throughout the game. The fourth item is how many times you continued (this is my best guess, as I never continued). Below all that is your grade out of 100. Each item has a face, and the happier it is, the better you did in that category. The big open mouth with the triangular irises means that you have performed the best in that category. If you want to get a 100, you'll need to score a lot of points (defeating multiple enemies at once helps, as does jumping on multiple projectiles during the boss fights), collect all the fruits, refrain from getting hit, and refrain from continuing.

And with that, you've just beaten Pokonyan! Henpokorin Adventure!

PrinceWatercress plays Pokonyan! Henpokorin Adventure - Part 4 of 5

Yet another fun little world to get through. Also, I accidentally glitch through a puzzle in the fourth bonus level.

World 4-1

There are a lot of birds and bunnies here. Stick to the clouds in this rainbow and ruins-decorated dream world, but watch out for the birds if you do.

There is a point in the middle of the level where there are four gray blocks on the ground side by side, and a fifth gray black on top. Push the block on top and drop down to get the bonus star.

The blimp in the background is the end.

World 4-2

Holding Up and pressing R will turn you into an owl and not a kangaroo, which allows you to fly around everywhere and zoom through the stage. You can still attack enemies from above, but you'll go through them if you do.

If you stay up top, you'll see three ramps, one above the other. To the right of them is the star.

The blue guys from the roller coaster track return here.

World 4-3

The sword and shield guys return, and in greater numbers. I found out at this point in the game that if they hit you, they actually stun you for longer than other enemies do.

The bonus star is near the end, at the last tower.

The white fox boss dashes in short spurts from one side of the screen to the other, then turns into an oni on a cloud who shoots lightning bolts downwards and brings down thunder directly underneath itself. Double jump to hit the boss while he is in oni form. If you're lucky, you can jump on the fox while he is in fox form. Six hits will net you the shortcake.

Bonus World 4

6:29 - Push the two blocks on the left so you can push the middle block.

6:51 - Push the lower-right block to the right, and do the same for the upper-right block. That's all you need to do, really. Yet for some reason, I accidentally glitch through.

PrinceWatercress plays Pokonyan! Henpokorin Adventure - Part 3 of 5

The worlds aren't getting much more difficult, but getting all of the fruits and stars is getting a little tricker...and so are the bonus stages!

World 3-1

The guys with the swords and the shields are back.

At the end of the first big ship is a crate. Push it and drop down to get the star.

Be sure to look high and low, as there will be a few crow's nests with treasure chests.

World 3-2

There are plenty of fish and squids to jump on in the water for some extra points, especially if you can jump on multiple enemies at once. The fish just swim forward while the squids will move upwards towards the surface of the water.

If you keep jumping in and out of the surface of the water, you can keep jumping forward perpetually and continuously.

Check the boats. Two of them will have treasure chests full of fruit that can be missed very easily.

At one point, you will reach dry land and find a rock on the ground. Push the rock, then keep dropping down to find the bonus star.

When you start seeing icebergs, you're near the end. If you missed anything, go back and get it, because the exit will be coming up very soon at that point.

World 3-3

There are penguins, but just like the sword and shield guys, they just slowly move forwards.

At the second set of ruins, jump up with a double jump at the treasure chest at the far left. You'll find the third bonus star.

The light blue fox will turn into a snowman when you jump on him. Stay all the way on the side opposite the snowman and jump over the snowman's head when it is thrown at you, then double jump over the snowman and all the icicles when the snowman rolls at you. After six hits, you'll get the ice cream cone.

Bonus World 3

5:54 - You'll need to push the block in the middle so you can push the block at the top down to the bottom.

6:20 - Push the block in the middle left so you can push the top block left. That way, you can push the bottom block to the right and continue.

PrinceWatercress plays Pokonyan! Henpokorin Adventure - Part 2 of 5

There's not a lot of enemies for most of this place, so you can get through here fairly quickly...but don't forget to pick up the stars and beat the bonus area.

World 2-1

World 2 takes place in an amusement park. Surprisingly, there are no enemies in this level. Just worry about getting all the fruit and getting through here quickly, which is something you can easily do in the amusement park due to the lack of enemies.

You can ride the rides, such as the rotating teacups and the Ferris wheel. You'll need to jump in order to get out of them, and you'll need to do that at the top of the Ferris wheel to get the bonus star.

World 2-2

The roller coaster may not have cars, but it has plenty of enemies in the form of the little guys in blue who slowly walk towards you.

Step onto the brown block with the white arrow pointing up above the start to be launched to the second bonus star.

The blue platform at the end is the exit.

World 2-3

There is a tree stomp on the ground shortly after the start of the level. Push it and drop down with Down+B where the stump used to be to get the third bonus star.

The birds are back, and you'll have to be around the blimps in the air in order to deal with them.

The fox boss here loves throwing stars, a boomerang that returns and a ball that bounces towards you. When he teleports into the screen, be ready to jump to the right and over the first set of projectiles as quickly as possible. After six hits, you'll get the lollipop. If you want, you can jump on the projectiles for extra bonus points before landing on the fox boss.

Bonus World 2

At this point, things get a little tougher.

6:57 - You'll need to push two blocks into the pit before you can leave. Thankfully, this is easy.

7:22 - Fill in the two gaps to the left, then push the left block at the top so you can more easily fill the gap and enter the next section.

7:40 - Push the left block at the top so you can push the bottom block, then push the right block on the top to the right (even though after you push the left block at the top, it doesn't matter which order the right-side blocks are pushed).

PrinceWatercress plays Pokonyan! Henpokorin Adventure - Part 1 of 5

Based on the anime of the same name, Pokonyan! Henpokorin Adventure got a video game adaptation for the Super Famicom. Believe it or not, there's actually slightly more to it than just being a simple Sonic clone.

Next | End

If you leave the attract mode running, the game will give you a brief tutorial.

Left and Right moves left and right, Up looks up, Down crouches and looks down, B jumps, and you can perform a double jump by jumping again while in the middle of a jump. The game is a bit like Sonic the Hedgehog or Bubsy in which you have to move in one direction for a little bit to gain momentum and speed, and the better and more momentum and speed you have, the better your jumps are.

Down+B lets you drop down platforms, including some hidden ones.

The R button allows you to transform. R on its own turns you into a kangaroo with a high jump, but there are other transformations that I learned about throughout the game, which the game does not tell you about in the tutorial. Transforming takes a few seconds, and if you press R again or get hit, you'll turn back into your regular tanuki form.

Holding Y will allow you to push blocks in front of you when you move them.

Start pauses the game, and when you do, your character falls asleep. If you press any button while the game is paused, he wakes up, and the game resumes. Your score is in the upper-left corner, while the current amount of time is in the upper-right corner. Whatever you do, do not let the timer fall to zero.

There are fruits located throughout the levels, and they are always set up in groups of five. This makes it easier to find all fifty fruits in a level. Be ready to look high and low for them.

There is a star in each level of every world, and you can see how many you have in the lower-right corner of the screen. If you collect three, you'll be whisked away to a bonus level. If you know what you're doing and you know where all the stars are, you'll be able to do a bonus area after every boss.

At the start of the game, pastel-colored foxes show up and steal all the sweets in the house and take them to another dimension, and it's up to you to get them back.

World 1-1

The brown triangles with the white triangles inside of them launch you in the direction that the white arrow points. This can be used to get the fruits within the clouds.

Enemies here include rabbits that jump up and down, warthogs that charge at you and defeat themselves if and when they run into a wall, birds that fly around and dive at you if you are nearby. If enemies hit you, you don't die, but you will be stunned for a second. You still do not want to take hits from enemies, and you'll find out why later. By later, I mean the end of the game.

Treasure boxes spit out items when you run into them. Usually, they will be in groups of five and will usually be fruits.

There is a box with a combination left and right arrow on the ground midway through the level. If you push the box to the left or right, stand where the box originally was, then press Down+B, you can drop down to find a star. Jump back up to get out of the secret passage.

The sign at the end of the level is the exit. When you reach the exit, you won't be able to back to pick up everything you missed, as the game locks you on the screen where the exit is. When you touch the exit, you'll eat all your fruit. Hold down B to speed up the eating process.

World 1-2

Watch out near the waterfalls, as they can make it harder to see enemies.

Near the end of the stage is a small tree stump. You'll want to push it to the side like you did with the block in World 1-1, stand where the stump once was, then drop down with Down+B to get the star.

The brown triangle near the end of the stage will take you to the last bit of fruit you'll need.

World 1-3

The soldiers with the swords and shields advance slowly to the left.

The bonus star is in plain sight above the first tree in the level.

The boss is a brown fox. He will throw acorns at you, and you can jump on them for a ton of points with a progressive gain in points for each one you jump on without touching the ground. To defeat the fox, you'll need to jump on his head six times, but if you can get a lot of points off the acorns, you can get a few thousand points off the fox. When you beat the brown fox, you'll get the chocolate bar, then you'll head to the next world. But first, the bonus level!

Bonus Level 1

In the bonus area, you'll need to push blocks in a specific way in order to get all the fruits and move on to the exit. The first one is so dead simple that I don't even need to explain how to get through it, as nothing here resembles even the easiest of puzzles. Once you get to the exit, it's on to World 2.
