Part nostalgia-bomb, part note-taking and part FAQ, what started in GameTrailers as a video game blog is now on Blogger. This blog is a look back at video games, both popular and obscure, from the video game industry's infancy all the way to the previous console generation.
The ultimate form has a fireball for a normal attack and four columns of fire that shoot forward from the ground for the charge attack. The teleport is a slide forward.
With each room you enter, you'll have to fight palette swaps of boss enemies that you've faced in the past. In order, you'll face the spider from Stage 1, the worm enemy from Stage 2, the scythe arm enemy from Stage 4, and two new enemies we haven't faced before. If you need to replenish health, there are fairies you can snack on between rooms.
The first new enemy is a laser eyeball from Stage 4 with a snake-like body. Use the charge shot to get rid of all the worms it shoots out as well as to damage the boss, and keep your distance. You should be good.
The second new enemy is a face. When you enter the room, go all the way to the right. This is the resurrected King of Demons. Iria will pop out of the forehead cavity before the boss finally fights you. The face then transforms. From the far right, keep double jumping while shooting fireballs at the eyes. When you see the blue lightning orbs, stop jumping, then double jump when the orb is about to hit the ground to avoid being shocked. When the mouth opens, the King of Demons will spit fire. If you're all the way to the far side of the screen and you're on the ground, the fire won't hit you. As you attack, you'll shoot down the horns and the eyes, and when that happens, the head will try to crush you. Stay to the far right and use your charge shot to get that last bit of damage in. When this boss dies, go all the way to the left.
With the King of Demons gone, Iria will pop out of the King's forehead, now in a demonic form. Unfortunately, she now turns on you. She has a double jump attack where she drops down and slightly forward to kick at you, and she also has an attack where she dashes at you. Move away to avoid the former; double jump to avoid the latter. If she shoots a red light out of her hands, be ready to keep your distance and be in mid-air to avoid the projectiles. In-between attacks, she will hop at you. Use this opportunity to hit her with normal attacks.
If you die when you reach the King of Demons, you'll start at the King of Demons; otherwise, you'll have to repeat the boss rush again.
When you beat Iria, you'll get one of two endings. If you didn't get the ultimate form, Abel will turn back into a human and try to take on the final boss again, but Iria dies, sadly. In the good ending, Iria finally snaps out of it, then Abel becomes the new King of Demons. You've beaten the game and got the good ending! Congratulations!
We're getting really close to Bayer and where he has held our daughter hostage...
Stage 4
The orange face is a machine gun. Avoid the shots, then shoot it with a charge shot.
You'll meet a mini-boss at the beginning that looks like the machine gun enemy, but has scythe-like arms that can be thrown in addition to an entire body. Jump over the scythes when it shoots them out at you, and keep hitting it with charge shots.
The red orb destroys all enemies on the screen.
The chains between cars do not act as platforms, so do not leap on those or else you'll fall onto the tracks and die.
The tiny men will leap at you if you're too close and hit you with clubs.
If you find another fairy while currently possessing one, you'll clear the screen of all enemies and refill all of your health. Otherwise, you'll get the fairy back.
The boxes with bombs will explode after taking enough damage, and you can find health power-ups inside some of them.
The flying eyeballs will shoot a laser downwards that you do not want to touch. Destroy the eyeballs to get the lasers out of your way.
To beat the two horsemen, just stay to the left, hit them when a charge shot when they focus on you to group them together, then keep hitting them with regular attacks to kill them both at the same time. You'll then dace the front car of the demon train. Keep shooting at the heart with charge shots, which lets you destroy the purple projectiles the train shoots out at the same time. Afterwards, you'll barge your way into the next stage.
Stage 5
Watch out for any snow crystals that fall down; they will hurt you if they land on you. Shortly after the start, you'll meet Bayer, who will send a crystal at you before flying away. As you go to the right, you'll have to avoid snowballs as you get teleported into the air, and you will have to continue to do so as you go further to the right. At this point, there will be some snows crystals that will also track you; you'll want to attack them to destroy them.
The next section is auto-scrolling, and this time, you'll approach some sort of strange demon that slowly moves up before coming straight down like some sort of crusher. If you get hit by the tusks or the ice crystals on its underside, you'll take damage, so be ready to duck.
In the third section, you'll be crossing a bridge. The bridge will start collapsing as you cross. Be ready to shoot a charge shot in mid-air to take care of some annoying enemies and to double jump in case you can't make it to the next segment of bridge in time.
You'll then fight Bayer, who turns into a much bigger demon. Shoot him with charge shots, avoid the fireballs he spits when he moves his head back, and when he produces blue lightning, move away so the ice crystal he sends at you does not hit you. If you can double jump and drop down just before a fireball is shot, it will be less likely to hit you.
The blue gem turns you into a blue dragon. The regular shot is a blue fireball, and the charge shot is .
Stage 6
Use charge shots to destroy the rocks that come out of the ground. The gray flying creatures are much like the fairies from Stage 2; if you shoot them, you can go up to them and press Down to eat them for health.
To destroy the lava worm, keep your distance to avoid the lunge attack, and avoid its three-way shot while hitting the face with charge shots.
The lava and the fire columns that rise out of it should be avoided, obviously. Also, there are rocks that split into an eight-way shot that can be tough to avoid.
At the end of the first section, go up first to get a key. The black blob guys spit fire up close, while the turtle enemies are only vulnerable after shooting their spikes. At the end is a dragon that can spit fireballs at you, but hitting it with nothing but charge shots will take it out very quickly. After beating this mini-boss, you can go right to get the key, then go down to unlock the locked door. As you go through this next section, a stream of lava will slowly approaching you from behind. Use your charge shot to destroy all obstacle, and try not to get hit by any fire columns.
Once you're outside, be careful on any bridges. They will crumble when you walk on them and they will eventually fall. You'll face a rock soldier. Watch the hands to see where they go, and jump over them when necessary. Charge shots will do a lot of damage if you shoot them from up close. After beating the rock soldier, use your regular attack from here on in to take out the black blob enemies.
You'll then fight some sort of large demon. Jump over the shock waves that result from the fireballs he drops down, and shoot at the arms with charge shots to stop the fireballs from coming down. After that, hit the eye in the chest cavity with charge shots when it is open. At this point, the boss will teleport; to avoid the three-way lightning shot he does when he re-appears, stand just left or right of the center of his body and you won't get hit.
Once you beat the boss, you'll get one last gem. If you've played all three forms once, you'll get the gray gem, which gives you your ultimate form and the good ending, should you beat the game. If you got the same form every single time and pick the one you have now, you'll get a stronger version of the form you have now, but you won't get the good ending.
You are Abel. Your wife and daughter have been kidnapped by your best friend Bayer in order to resurrect the King of Demons. It's time to go after him and save your family.
Stage 1
Walk our way to the right. You'll meet Bayer, who is now a demon who has his arms replaced with wings. He has sold his soul to the demons to become one himself, and that he kidnapped your wife and daughter in order to resurrect Majuu Ou, also known as the King of Demons. He then nearly kills you, but your wife and daughter, Maria and Ilia, chastise you for letting yourself get defeated and you pull yourself back up.
From here, you'll fight Bayer. Left and Right on the Control Pad let you move, Y lets you shoot, B lets you jump and pressing it again in mid-air lets you perform a double jump, Down and B let you perform a slide, and holding Y lets you perform a charge attack. Avoid Bayer whenever he dives at you and hit him with a charge attack. Letting a few of these loose will allow you to beat Bayer...for now.
Keep heading to the right. You'll be met by your wife, who is now dead following a failed attempt to protect Ilia. She follows you around in the form of a fairy, and as long as she is with you, she attacks alongside you and also acts as an auto-revive in case you die. You'll only find her a few times within the course of the game, so you'll want to play well.
Stage 2
The red gauge at the top is your health. Before that is the gauge for your charge attack. When it fills up while holding the Y button, you can perform a charge attack. To the right of that is the number of lives you have, and to the right of that is your score and your time. If time runs out, you lose a life.
The blue gems will restore some of your health. Press Down while standing on top of one to grab it.
In the tunnel, you'll shoot down some small airborne enemies that go down very easily, but you'll also be chased by some sort of worm. Keep running to the right to get away from it, and you'll run into a dead end. The floor below your feet will then collapse.
You'll then end up in a sewer dungeon. Enemies here include purple women with guns (whose shots you can duck), frog men that leap around, spikes on strings that get in the way of your shots and zombies (one shot beheads them, the next kills them outright). Be sure to avoid spikes on the ground.
Your maximum health will increase every 5000 points. This will definitely help you stay alive.
When you enter the elevator, you will face a spider demon. Hit it with a charge shot and take out the two blobs that cmoe out of the ceiling, and be ready to hold Down and press B to perform an evasive roll when the spider comes back to dive down at you. From there, keep hitting it with charge shot and keep avoiding it, and it will eventually go down. You'll get an extra minute of time for beating this thing (as well as any boss enemy). Bosses have their own health meter, and that meter replaces the score when you face them.
In the next section, go to the left. You'll face the worm. Keep jumping up and shooting it in the mouth; you will do damage when the mouth opens and also destroy its projectiles in the process. When it dies, you'll get a key; pick it up like you did the blue gem from earlier. From here, keep going right.
The blobs come back, but you'll also see big brown guys. Use charge shots to make defeating them easier.
You'll face another boss: a demon that looks like a woman naked from the waist up with dragon wings for arms and a face for a torso with chicken legs. Stay to the left, keep shooting this thing in the human head, and avoid the projectiles. If you get too close to it, it will hit you with its tongue, but that won't be a problem. When it dies, a gem will show up. It will switch from red to blue to green, and when you shoot it, it will stay at the color it was when shot. You can then pick it up with Down on the Control Pad. Each color will give you a specific form, and if you play as all three of them, you'll get something good later. If you leave it alone, it will disappear, and you will play the next stage as a human. (It is possible to beat the game without becoming a demon, but it is much harder and you don't get a special ending for it.)
The red gem turns you into a bug-like thing that looks similar to Abel's human form, but is very much insect-like. It shoots crescent shots forward that circle around as they travel in that direction, and the charge shot is a fireball with as much range and power as your human form's equivalent.
Stage 3
The flowers with faces will spit projectiles at you. Shoot at them when their faces are exposed.
There are some green fairy generators that produce yellow fairies that fly towards you. If you kill them, then press Down at their bodies before they disappear, you can eat them for some free health. (This is the only enemy you can do this with; every other enemy disappears upon being destroyed.) Given that blue gems are not common to come across (and neither are these enemies), you'll want to play
The big green worms can easily be destroyed with a charge shot. Watch out for their lasers; they shoot multiple lasers that go in different directions.
The mini-boss is some sort of mantis-worm hybrid that flies around. When it flies in thin oval patterns, double-jump over it so you don't get cornered, and shoot charge shots at the head. After the circle, it does wider sine wave-style movement patterns that are easier to avoid.
The second mini-boss is a giant eyeball. Keep hitting it with charge shots, and use your slide to avoid the laser as soon as you see it so it doesn't hit you when it expands. After enough damage, the eye will teleport in and out before using the laser again. After even more damage, it will shrink down and spin around, and the direction it is looking when it stops is where it will launch itself in an attempt to hit you while bouncing around the screen. If you hit it, it will stop, then spin around and try to launch itself again, and keep doing this until you kill it. Sadly, you don't get to see much of the third form, since I wrecked the boss so badly during the first two that it couldn't even get going on the third.
The boss is some demon in a flower. Stay low when it shoots its gun, and be ready to move towards the boss when it tries to hit you with its whip-like arm. If you're dropping down when the whip arm is out, the whip arm will completely miss you. Throw charge shots at the demon itself to deal damage.
The green form is some pointy-headed demon with a wing-like cape. Turns out, that cape really is a set of wings for the double jump. The regular shot is a very thin laser and the charge shot is a pair of rings that do multiple hits to enemies. Also, the slide is a short teleport forward.
