While the developers couldn't get Jim Carrey's voice talents, this is still an okay game...up to a point.
Around the same time that the live-action Grinch movie starring Jim Carrey came out in 2000, there was a video game loosely based on the film. Much like in the film, The Grinch plans on stealing Christmas for Whoville, but as he looks through his blueprints to see what gadgets he should make, he falls off a pile of boxes and knocks his blueprints off. The blueprints fly out of the cave and into Wholand, and now The Grinch has to go down there and get all the blueprints back.
From here, you'll gain control of The Grinch at the top of Mt. Crumpit for the in-game tutorial.
If you go back to the cliff, you can get The Grinch to look into his telescope, but you won't be able to do much here.
The first thing you'll learn how to do is jump and pancake. Besides the obvious of using the D-Pad to move around, pressing X allows you to jump, and pressing X again while in mid-air allows you to perform a pancake attack that allows you to smash boxes and other things. It cannot be used to defeat enemies. By smashing the crates, you'll find a key to the nearby door in the last crate that you smash. Get the key, then run into the locked door to open it.
Sometimes, you can move things by pressing and holding Triangle while in front of them, and then pressing Up, Down, Left or Right on the D-Pad while holding Triangle. When you move the shell blocking the next room out of the way, you'll learn how to play as Max. To switch between The Grinch and Max, press Select. Move Max around with the D-Pad, and use Max to enter small holes that The Grinch cannot. Max can collect items, but cannot use them; if you find anything, you'll need to return to The Grinch and press Select so that The Grinch can get and use the item. Move Max through the hole in the wooden door to get the key, then return to The Grinch. You can then go through the next locked door.
To get past the breath analyzer, you'll need to breathe on it. To use your breath attack, press Square. Press Square in front of the breath analyzer to open the next door. You can also use the breath attack to reveal a few things as well as get rid of some annoying Whos.
Press Triangle in front of a lever to grab it. From there, the game will tell you where you can go with Up or Down at the bottom of the . Head down, and you'll reach The Grinch's computer as well as the level hub. The computer will be used to rebuild gadgets when you get all the blueprints for them, and the teleporters will take you to the four worlds of the game...assuming you've unlocked them. You'll only be able to play the first one, Downtown Whoville, at the start, and you'll have to do things in the levels to unlock more of them.
L2 and R2 allow you to rotate the camera. Pressing R1 will let you look around in first-person mode, and pressing it again will bring you back to the normal view in the direction you were last looking, which allows you to line yourself up with things. Double-tapping R1 allows you to quickly get the camera back behind The Grinch.
At the Pause screen, you can check out the missions that you can do for Downtown Whoville. Pages for other levels will unlock alongside the levels. You can also see all the gadgets that can be rebuilt and used, and you can also see the totals for all the collectibles that you have. You can also play around with the sound settings, save the game, and quit the game.
