PrinceWatercress plays Puss 'n Boots: Pero's Great Adventure - Longplay

Here's the whole game in one video, minus commentary. Can't believe I died a few times. Ah, well. Enjoy!

Here's the story, according to the manual:

Count Gruemon, a notorious swine, hated mice with a passion. One day, he discovered a mouse in his castle. Frustrated and irate, Count Gruemon ordered Puss 'N Boots (Pero) to find and destroy the mouse. However, Pero was a kind-hearted cat and had become friends with the mouse, and so, helped the little creature to escape. In a fit of anger, Count Gruemon, aided by Dr. Gari-gari, a fiendish scientist wolf, sent Pero on a perilous time-travel journey around the world and into the past.

Pero must locate and defeat Count Gruemon and the mad Dr. Gari-gari, and use their time machine to get home - or be stuck in the past forever. To make matters worse, the Cat Kingdom has sent Killers after Pero because he helped a mouse and thereby violated Cat Kingdom Law. Pero must travel to exotic lands and overcome many hazards, but can he defeat the combined might of the diabolical Count Gruemon, Dr. Gari-gari, and the Killers?

(Count Gruemon was named Count Gourmon in the anime.)

The West

The D-Pad lets you move around and duck, while B attacks with your currently activated weapon and A jumps. If you press Start to pause, you can select weapons with the D-Pad. You have three weapons: a gun that shoots bullets, a bomb that has a throwing arc and can do damage to enemies and bosses, and a giant boomerang that let you attack from far away a little more quickly.

If you stick to the rooftops of the buildings, you won't have to deal with a lot of enemies. There will be some enemies such as flying horseshoes and bouncing balls.

Ocean

You'll first be on a ship. You can hold Up and press B to fire upwards, which helps with the thunderbolts and some of the enemies that try to jump over you. Other enemies here include shark fins that take one bullet and ships that take three bullets. Take it slow and steady, and you can easily beat the enemies.

Next, you'll be in a submarine. You'll need to shoot the rock walls in order to open a path through them. Thankfully, you can move in eight directions, even though the A button lets you move upwards. Enemies here include fish that leap up, some weird orange thing that hits you from a distance from the ground, manta rays that move up and down as they move forward.

The areas with the black lines pull you forward a little bit.

The boot gives you temporary invincibility.

The boss here is a giant metal frog. Equip the bomb and throw bombs into the frog's mouth when it is opened while avoiding the smaller frogs that are sent at you.

Arabia

You're in a car here. Thankfully, you can jump in the car, and you can also shoot bullets. Take out the bats if you can, and avoid them if you can't. Hopping lets you move forward faster than just moving on the ground.

If you stick to the rooftops, you can get a Pero icon, which nets you an extra life. You can also get the boot.

Jump over the geysers when they make their way down.

Space Wars

In this level, you'll be flying in a plane. You can only fire straight forward with B while moving in eight directions with the D-Pad. Keep close attention to your surroundings, and you're the largest thing on the screen and it can be pretty easy to hit something.

The eagles will try to poop up on us if we are below them. Stay above them and shoot them from behind. The money bag gives you points. Also, thunderbolts will strike from all over.

After the grey enemy on the airplane, you'll find a Pero head. Pick it up for an extra life.

When you see the U.F.O., shoot it down immediately and avoid being shot down yourself. The more quickly you destroy it, the less you'll have to worry about it disappearing and re-appearing in a different location on the screen.

Once you beat the U.F.O., it's on to London.

Why this level is called "Space Wars," I will never know.

London

Unlike The West, you won't be able to stay on top of the buildings as often. Be ready to shoot forward and behind. If you see an enemy, stop to shoot it down. Keep the gun equipped at all times.

After entering the first door, you'll have to deal with conveyor belts and green columns in the ceilings that move up and down to mess up your jumps. Enemies will show up, but they'll usually walk off the conveyor belts.

After the second door, watch out for the gray columns in the floor and the ceilings that move up and down.

After the third door, you can jump to the platforms on the top to make it easier to avoid the bats. You'll have to come down eventually, though.

The boss here is a blue demon that sits in the center and breathes fireballs while swinging his sword. Equip the bomb and throw bombs at the demon's mouth while taking as little damage as possible. It helps to come here with full health, assuming you know what you're doing.

Liberty

In this level, you'll be flying in a hot air balloon. Pressing B lets you shoot forward. You'll need to constantly press Up on the D-Pad to avoid falling to the bottom of the screen, as that will kill you. Take it slow to avoid and shoot down the lightning bolts, and be ready to shoot down enemies on hot air balloons. When you see the stars coming down, stay just below center and avoid them and the lightning bolts until you reach the end.

New York

As soon as you're ready, go through the door at the start.

In the first room, avoid the fireballs as you make your way up and enter the door that you see at the top.

In the second room, get to the center of the screen to center Pero, then head to the right and defeat enemies as you go. Go all the way to the right and enter the door you see at the end.

In the third room, go all the way to the top and enter the door on the right.

In the fourth room, get to the first door you see. You'll be at the three doors above. Enter the door to the far left.

In the fifth room, avoid the fireballs as you go all the way up, and enter the door in the upper-right corner.

To beat the snake, you'll need to shoot at the head. Avoid the snake and its fireballs and fire at it when it reaches your level. When the snake dies, enter the door to the right.

In the next room, watch out for the fireballs that drop down from the pipes above. When you reach the end, you'll finally meet Count Gruemon and Dr. Gari-gari. Get all the way to the right side of the screen, and avoid the bullets as you do. From here, you'll need to stay there and shoot at Dr. Gari-gari (the wolf) first until he is down and jump over all the bullets that come your way as you do. Until Dr. Gari-gari is defeat, Count Gruemon is invulnerable. Once Gari-gari is down, you can take out Gruemon the same way you did Gari-gari. There just won't be as many bullets this time. Once you beat them, you can go to the right, enter the door, and beat the game! You've completed Puss In Boots!
