PrinceWatercress plays Beneath A Steel Sky - Part 5 of 20

We'll have to do some fiddling around in town if we want to use the elevator...

If you head to the west-most screen of the top level of the building, then enter the door on the east side of the screen, you can go back to the recycling plant! If you forgot to get the wrench, you can go back for it.

In the door to the west is the power plant. There is a surge test control machine with two buttons as well as a control panel, as well as an old guy who is sleeping with a cigarette in his mouth. If you try to flip the switch on the control panel, the man who is sleeping will stop you. There is also a light bulb connected to the control panel, and the old man won't let you touch it, either.

You can talk to the man with the cigarette in his mouth if you want, posing as in inspector all the while. He will tell you that the saboteurs represent Hobart Corporation, a rival corporation who is beating Union City economically by flooding the market with "gimmicky garbage," as the old man puts it. He will also tell you that the council is doing a grand job, the opposite of what Hopkins. Other than this, this guy is not much in the way of help.

Talk to Joey. If you tell him to go to the button on the right on the surge control unit, he will tell you that the button is jammed tight. If you examine either of the buttons on it yourself, you'll find out that there are safety devices in place on both buttons. Use the wrench on the two buttons to loosen the nuts, effectively loosening the safety device. From here, you can ask Joey to hit the button on the right again. This time, Joey will be able to press it. As he presses that button, right-click the button on the left so Robert presses it. This will cause a lot of steam to come out, and the old man will leave the room to fetch for Hobbins.

Thankfully, this next part is not timed. Go up to the control panel and press the switch to shut off the power. This will turn the light bulb off. You can now take the light bulb. From there, place the putty where the light bulb was, then flip the switch again. This will open up the control panel. Flip the left switch up and the right switch down. You can now use the elevator!

It you don't put the putty where the light bulb used to be, you can shock yourself and die if you touch the panel before flipping the switch again. Hope you saved your progress before touching anything!

The door near the security logo is the security office. If you go here after making steam come out of the pipe, the old man you saw earlier. Sam and Norville, the guys behind the desk, will not be of any help. Also, if you try to use Reich's ID card on the card slot at the door on the east end, you won't be able to go in. The first two times you do this will not get you in trouble again, but if you try to do it a third time, the scanner will zap you and instantly kill you, and Sam and Norville laugh at you dying for using a stolen ID card, even though they played along with what was going on the whole time.

You can use the LINC terminals by using Reich's ID card on the terminal. You can see the local news, see personal details on Captain Reich, and a commercial for local businesses. You can use the number pad to go through the options, and you can press "Exit" to exit the terminal. You could be able to use the security services, but you'll fail the retina scan.

If you use Reich's card on the card slot next to the elevator, you can now take the elevator and make our way down a floor.
