PrinceWatercress plays Beneath A Steel Sky - Part 10 of 20

We're finally in the city's security building. Now that we're here, let's go to LINC-Space and get some more files.

Now that you've got your cable back, you can head through the doorway to the east. If you left-click the lockers to examine them, you'll find out one of them belongs to Reich. You can use Reich's ID card on the slot, but there's nothing useful inside.

In the room to the west, there is an interface, and a card slot to the right of it. This is the LINC interface. Use Reich's card on the slot, then right-click on the interface to sit in it. The helmet will lower down, and you'll be plugged into LINC-Space.

There is an eyeball that watches you here. This is used as a security measure in LINC-Space. There is also a ball here. If you right-click it, it will become part of your inventory. The ball is compressed data, and it will be useful shortly. There is a tuning fork on the floor past a pit, but you won't be able to get it yet.

Your inventory will also be different in LINC-Space. The question mark acts as the help screen for LINC-Space. Click it first, then click on something else to see what it does. Disconnect lets you disconnect from LINC-Space at any time; Open lets you open a file, the two documents with the question marks are not useful (yet); Charon will allow you to override system log-on security.

The streams of lights are doorways. Use them to move across LINC-Space. By going east, you'll find a carpet bag. Use the Open command from your inventory to open the carpet bag to find a birthday surprise and a magnifying glass. The magnifying glass will allow you to decrypt files, which will allow you to identify your two mystery objects as documents. Decrypt them now; this will be important later. The birthday surprise is a decompression routine that will decompress files. You can use this on the compressed file to split it in half and decompress it.

If you go north, the security eyeball will kick you out of LINC-Space, so don't do it. Go east instead. Use the two halves of the now-decompressed file. (If you haven't decompressed the compressed file, do it now.) Place the green file down where you started, then go east and place the red file down. Go back, get the green file, go north one space, and place the green file down. Go back to the red file and pick it back up, then go one space north and place the red file down. Get the green file, then go to the southeast corner and place the green file down to enter the doorway on the other side.

The doorway leads to a room with two items: a bust (which contains the Phoenix program) and a book (which contains a text file called PHOENIX.DOC). Take them both, then disconnect from LINC-Space. You're done here for now.

Use the LINC terminal when you're out of the interface, then go to Security Services. This time, you'll be able to pass the retina scan and read the three documents that you have, as well as perform some special operations. The first one is called "BRIEFING.DOC," and reveals that you are Overmann while also mentioned that your mother, Maria Pierro, smuggled you out while trying to defect back to Hobart (which goes back to the crash you survived that is mentioned in the intro to the game). The second is called "REPORT.DOC," which reveals that there is no authority on record for Gilbert Lamb being promoted to a supervisor and that unlawful intrusion is suspected, which has led to Lamb being under level 3 surveillance. (Considering that Hobbins found it bizarre that Lamb became a supervisor when we first talked to him, this makes things even more bizarre.) The third is called "PHOENIX.DOC", which allows the bearer of the Phoenix program to utilize Phoenix status override in the course of investigations.

From here, you can go from viewing documents to performing special operations. From here, you can go to File Adjustment and get the identification details, bank account balance and LINC Status of Gilbert Lamb. From here, you can freeze his assets (which you don't need to do) and also make him a D-LINC (which we'll need to do eventually).

You can also put in a Special Status Request in Special Operations. By selecting this option, you can now go to the ground level, as this option will grant you authority of temporary enhancement of LINC status which grants you access to all sectors.

Once you leave the terminal, Robert will learn that he is Overmann, and that he now has two questions: why does LINC want him? And what happened to his father (who hasn't been mentioned until now)?

Now that you have done a few things, you can now use Reich's card on the card slot near the scanner to exit the room and head back to the security office. From here, you can go back to the security office if you need to go back to the LINC interface, which you will be using again.
