PrinceWatercress plays Super Mario Bros. 2 - Part 1 of 7

Here's one that I never thought I would play through and complete for the Internet. Maybe one of these days I can complete the trilogy. For now, here's the Western version of Mario 2.

World 1-1

Mario has no strengths (and no weaknesses). Luigi is faster than Mario, has a higher jump and is able to lift things faster. Toad is the fastest runner and lifter. Princess Toadstool/Peach has the best jump, as she can float while you hold down the jump button, but she is the slowest runner and the slowest lifter.

A jumps, B lets you lift things such as enemies and plants in addition to running when held, Down lets you duck, and Left and Right let you move around. Up and Down let you climb on vines. B also lets you throw something that is in your hands. If you hold Down while on the ground for a few seconds, your character will flash, and if you jump while flashing, you'll perform a higher jump than normal.

Enemies here include Shy Guys who move towards you, Tweeters who jump up and down every so often. You can ride on top of enemies by jumping and standing on them, and you can also pick them up from above with B and throw them into other enemies by pressing B again. Up lets you enter doors and doorways.

By moving onto a plant in the ground and pressing B, you can grab whatever is below. Magic potions let you create doors to a "shadow version" of the current screen, and if you use it on the right spot, you can get a mushroom that adds to the two hit points on the upper-left corner of the screen when you jump onto it and pick it up. The plants also turn into coins that can be used for the slot machine mini-game at the end of each stage, which will be mentioned later. You can go for up to two coin runs before the plants become plants in the "shadow world" again.

You start out with two hit points, which are in the upper-left corner of the screen. If you go down to one, you will be small, but collecting a heart will make you big again. You can have up to four in any stage, and when you start a new stage, you will go back to the default two.

The first mushroom - and the potion for it - is near the vine shortly after the start. The second mushroom - and the potion for it - is near the vine leading into the sky.

The logs that go down the waterfall can be ridden on if you jump onto them, but you'll have to be quick so you don't go down the bottomless pit.

The cherries will cause a Starman that gives you temporary invincibility if you touch it.

The POW block destroys all enemies currently on-screen. If you destroy enough enemies, a heart will fly up from the bottom of the screen, and if you grab it, you'll refill one hit point on your health.

By picking up five big vegetables out of the ground, you can spawn a stop watch that temporarily freezes all enemies.

The bombs explode when left out for long enough. Use them to defeat enemies and also destroy the brown, cracked blocks.

The Ninjis are the black creatures who jump in place. Some of them will move later on. The red bugs on the vines are called the Hoopsters, and they move up and down the vines.

At the end, you'll face Birdo. Birdo will spit eggs at you, and you will need to jump on the eggs, grab them and throw them at Birdo. After three hits, you can pick up the orb that Birdo leaves behind to enter the door that looks like a black hawk.

You'll then take on the slot machine bonus game. Press A when the panels are on the exact thing that you want, and you should be able to get 1-Ups for getting a Cherry on the left-most reel as well as three of the same thing. You will go from the left-most reel to the right-most reel as you press A, and two Cherries in a row from the left gives you a 3-Up while three Cherries gives you a 5-Up. The timing is pretty strict, but if you can pull it off, you can get a lot of lives off this mini-game. When you run out of coins, it's off to the next stage.

World 1-2

The Pidgit rides a magic carpet. Jump on the Pidgit when it dives towards you, then grab it and throw it away before using the Control Pad to move the magic carpet as you ride. You can only ride the carpet for a limited time, and as you do so, you want to move away from the Beezos so you don't get hit.

By pressing Down on the pipes, you can go down a few of them. To go back up, just jump up past the top of the screen. One of the pipes has a key, but when you grab it, you had better start running, as one of the Phantos will chase after you. You'll need to run to the door with the keyhole on it and press Up while holding the key to unlock the door. Thankfully, if you throw the key away, the Phanto will stop chasing you for a little while.

You'll then be in a cave. The guys with the black masks are Snifits, and they will spit bullets at you. Some stay in place, while others jump in place and others still move around. There will also be some dirt blocks that you'll need to blow up with Bombs you'll pull out of the ground. Be sure not to off-screen the blocks, or else you won't destroy them.

Afterwards, head to the right and face Birdo. It's then on to World 1-3.

If you need mushrooms, the first one will be between the two pipes after the magic carpet ride and the second one is in the cave past the bomb part.

World 1-3

The fish that leap up and down from the bottom of the screen are Trouters. You can ride them, but it is not recommended.

The first mushroom is on the long log platform before the first set of Trouters.

The area with the two green platforms and the log on top of them has a potion, and you can find your first mushroom if you take the potion to the left and place the door where the five plants on the high platform after the first set of Trouters are. If you take the potion further to the right past the door to the pipe, place the potion near the pipe and go down the pipe in the "shadow world," you'll warp to World 3.

The door at the end will lead to a . Sparks will travel across floors, walls and ceilings, so watch out for them when you see them. Thankfully, you can throw items at them. Make your way up and use the mushroom blocks as platforms, then enter the door at the top. Grab the key, then go back through the door and drop all the way down. Open the keyhole door.

On the way to the right, you'll have one more chance to defeat some enemies and potentially refill a hit point. After this, you'll face Mouser, a giant mouse who throws bombs. Take the bombs and throw them onto the platform Mouser is on. If a bomb explosion hits Mouser, it will do damage. Thankfully, you can jump into bombs from underneath whenever Mouser throws one to grab it and put it on the platform. After a few hits, Mouser is done.
