PrinceWatercress plays Growl (GEN/MD)

This could have been a better game. I like the presentation, but this could have been better.

The Control Pad moves you around. A lets you attack, B lets you jump and C lets you use your special attack.

You have four characters to choose from: Gen, Burn, Khan and Jack. Gen has the best jump has an average attack and life; Burn has high health but a weak attack and an average jump; Kan has a weak attack but has a good jump and high health; Jack has the most powerful attack but the lowest amount of health in the game as well as an average jump.

In the early part of the 20th century, a group of evil poachers recklessly hunted animals nearly to the point of extinction. Gen, Burn, Khan and Jack are tasked to take down the poachers.

You start off in the bar. When the bar gets firebombed; grab the rocket launcher (the green box in the upper-left corner) and blast away at as many enemies as possible. There will be a machine gun in the barrels to the right; grab it when you run out of rockets. Further to the right is a guy whipping a lion; shoot him down and get the whip as quickly as possible; it's the best weapon in the game hands down and you'll need it to take out enemies easily - especially if an enemy is right behind you, as the whip animation hits enemies that are way too close to your backside. Thankfully, you can hit enemies with the butt of the machine gun up close if you run out of ammunition for it. If you don't have a weapon, your best bet is to do nothing but jump kicks, since your standing combo is absolutely useless and jump kicking is the only way to take out the enemies without getting absolutely rinsed. If you have a weapon and lose it, use your special and get the weapon back.

Barrels and crates will sometimes contain items and weapons. The dark brown barrels explode shortly after being hit.

The men in the white shirts, hats and pants will sometimes carry knives. If they do, get in close so they do not throw the knife at you. The female enemies will sometimes throw firebombs that can destroy you as well as enemies and make the screen glow orange when they blow up. The men in the turbans and face masks will sometimes carry whips.

Sometimes animals will help you on the way. At one point near the train, a hawk will be on top of a guy, keeping him in place so you can beat him up.

The rocks can be thrown and used over and over if you keep them on-screen all the time.

You can restore your health with things such as apples, but good luck finding them as they are few and far between.

The first boss is some big fat guy who tries to charge at you. Your best bet is to hit him with the whip and keep him away. If he gets on his knees and explodes, get ready to hit him with the whip when he charges at you, then move to the other side of the screen and be ready to hit him again when he does his explosive charge again.

When you get on the train, you'll fight off enemies, but more hawks will show up and eventually finish them all off. You'll then enter a bonus stage when you get off the bonus stage where you can break a cage full of hawks to free the hawks and also break barrels to find some weapons and health pick-ups.

At one points when you get off the train, a bunch of deer will stampede and defeat enemies for you. This is because shortly after you get off the train, two poachers attack a defenseless deer, but thankfully you get the chance to beat them up.

You'll eventually fight large men in suits, ties and fezes. Strike them one with the whip, then sidestep to avoid their diving elbow tackle. You fight four of them at once when you first meet them, and if you get them all on the wall in this first encounter, you can get them all in one place and hit them all at once.

You'll eventually get on a small ship where a few elephants are held against their will. The boss here is some guy with a white bag around his head. Hit him, then side step him and hope he doesn't hit you. If you knock him back, so much the better. When he gets on his knees and begs for you to spare his life, hit him. Otherwise, he'll try to kill you again.

Once you get off the boat, a baby elephant will follow you around in thanks for rescuing all the elephants, and thank you in the form of running into enemies in such a way that they explode and blow up into large chunks. You'll eventually reach a building, and when you beat all the enemies you meet in front of it, stand below the awning so you don't get hit by any of the six explosives coming from the right side of the screen that scare the baby elephant away.

You'll then meet some guy in a tank, but a much bigger elephant shows up and disables the tank. You'll then have to fight a whole bunch of enemies that come out of the tank. Afterwards, you'll enter a cave where any weapon you bring in will immediately be taken away from you and you will be carrying a torch instead. Your best bet is to go as far down as you can and just jump back and forth while repeatedly doing jump kicks. Don't even bother doing your special in the cave; the game doesn't let you do it. Oh, and after you come out of the cave, you'll never find a whip for the rest of the game. Thanks, Taito.

When you come out of the cave, you'll be caught in a mudslide, but a hawk will be able to save you when you're able to jump into it. After that, it's time for some more beatdowns on all four of the game's enemy types - the guys, the women, the Middle Eastern-looking guys and the big fat guys -  then you'll have to fight a big guy in a green tank top. Your best bet is to throw rocks at him and side-step immediately afterwards and keep your distance.

You'll soon come across a steel gate where you have to fight three helmeted guys. When you beat them up, you'll meet some guy in a suit, top hat and claws. Your best bet is throw the rock at him in such a way as to keep all of the rock on-screen so you can pick it back up again, then sidestep so you don't get shot at. (Yes, he shoots at you.) When you somehow beat this guy, the guy's body will travel to the center of the screen and aliens will come ou, then the guy's body will explode and a giant alien will pop out. He will jump around the screen, and after five jumps, he will either spit a firebomb at you or roll at you after standing there for a few seconds. Take the time he uses to stand in place to either jump kick him or throw a rock at him. Once you've beaten this guy, you've won! Enjoy your ending!

Anyway, this could have been better. This lasted me about thirty minutes, but I wish I could have been able to use my standing combo on the weakest enemies in the game without getting hit out of it and I wish there was a two-player mode like in the arcade. Oh, well...
