PrinceWatercress plays Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando - Part 1 of 54

The first game was fun...but the second game has a lot more going on. And it's about time I dug in. Let's get into it.

Next | End

After the events of the first game, things have been going slowly as far as the hero business goes, and Ratchet feels that nobody seems to need a hero at the moment. All of a sudden, in the distant Bogon Galaxy, somebody has managed to find Ratchet and Clank, and beams them up from out of nowhere. That somebody is Abercrombie Fizzwidget, founder of the Megacorp company - which is this game's version of Gadgetron - in the Bogon Galaxy. As he speaks with multiple malapropisms, he states that there is a problem of galactic importance and that Ratchet will have to go through a dangerous mission in another galaxy.

A few days ago, a top-secret biological experiment was stolen from Megacorp's testing laboratory by a thief, and Ratchet's help is needed to get it back...and only Ratchet's, as Clank is given a job as the head accountant of Megacorp, complete with a penthouse suite in Megapolis as well as a robot masseuse, forcing Ratchet to go it alone after going some heavy training and conditioning.

Two weeks later, Ratchet - now in a brand new uniform - gets the mission to go after the thief, who has been tracked to an aerial base above the planet Aranos. Ratchet manages to dock his new ship inside the base, and from here, you have control - minus Clank, who is obviously off elsewhere.

Planet Aranos

When you start the game, you'll start with two weapons: the Lancer, which is your standard machine gun and replaces the Blaster, and the Gravity Bomb, which replaces the Bomb Glove and has its own target reticle that shows where the bomb will land when you fire it.

You'll learn how to play through the game with the prompts with the game gives you, as Aranos acts as a tutorial level.

This time around, you start out with four hit points. Compared to the first game, you have an experience bar that fills up as you defeat enemies, and when it fills up, you'll destroy all nearby enemies automatically and you'll earn an extra unit of Nanotech which acts as an extra hit point. The most HP you can have is 40, and you can replenish it by picking up Nanotech. Also, if you need more ammo, you can find it by breaking crates with the Megacorp "M" logo on it.

The enemies here are easy to defeat. The Lancer has a target reticle when Ratchet is focusing on an enemy, and the Gravity Bomb will tell you with its white reticle where the bomb will land when you fire it. You also have your wrench to fight enemies from a distance, and you can press Square at any time to find it.

Thankfully, I've put the controls at the very end of the blog entry and will put it at the end of all blog entries for this game, and they will be added onto as the game progresses and we are introduced to new things. Feel free to refer to those when necessary.

You'll eventually find the top-secret project, but you'll meet the thief and two robots. The thief soon flees with the top-secret project, and you're forced to fight the two robot goons as well as a few more. Once you beat them, you'll fight some more robots with flamethrowers on one of the wings before you get a cutscene where the thief talks to another goon in their ship for some more hired help.

You'll then have to continue through the ship until Ratchet eventually jumps off the ship and escapes. Back in space, Ratchet updates Mr. Fizzwidget about the thief getting away, and Fizzwidget reveals where the thief is: the swamp planet Oozla, which is where we head next.
