LancerD1984 plays X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse - Part 5 of 6

"...or, How To Get Through Avalon With Everyone Ever."

Avalon

Password: Psylocke, Wolverine, Cyclops, Cyclops, Cyclops, Beast, Psylocke, Cyclops

Just like the beginning of the game, each character has their own path through Avalon. Thankfully, you only need to beat the game with one character. Thankfully, LancerD1984 covers all five paths.

Gambit Path

You'll see not only the dark blue robots that move back and forth and shoot lasers at you, you'll also see Exodus's Acolytes teleporting in and out every so often. They'll show up, throw a ball of energy at you that has homing capabilities, disappear, show up again, rinse and repeat. When you kill them, they'll disappear but they won't come back. You'll be seeing them a lot throughout Avalon, and they take slightly more damage than a Genoshan Magistrate.

The platforms at the beginnings have laser cannons at the bottom, but you can easily destroy these cannons.

Not long after you start will you fight Exodus. He'll fly around, teleport in and out and shoot his eye lasers at you. If he dives for the floor, get away! If he grabs a hold of you, he will take you up into the air and throw you to the ground for some cheap damage. He can also teleport into the screen at a higher position than normal and fly straight at you with a powerful kick attack.

You'll have to jump up and hit him, and all the while, you'll have to be careful as to not only avoid his attacks, but also with the Acolytes that show up. Sometimes they show up, sometimes they don't. It depends on who you're using and when. For this first battle, you won't have to deal with them.

When you bring his energy bar down to half, you'll get rid of him and any onscreen henchmen. He'll disappear and you'll have to play another character's path to face him again. At that point, he'll have only half health left, and you can fight him again to get rid of him once and for all. Once you do, he won't show up in the other paths, making it easier to get through the game with multiple characters should the need arise.

As you continue on, you'll not only find some energy but also a little square with a picture of one of the X-Men. It rotates between the five playable characters and gives whoever is shown an extra life when you pick it up. This is really good, as you can either give your favorite characters or characters you're best with extra lives. It also allows you to take a character who has lost all of his lives and revive him. That's nice.

As you go, you'll see laser turrets on the ceiling. Use the upward card throw to get rid of them.

The boss is a hologram generator that creates holographic versions of the other playable X-Men. You'll have to kill all four holograms to move on. Interestingly, they fight just like all the other playable characters Psylocke is the worst, as she will jump kick you as soon as she gets the chance and is pretty fast. Cyclops is easy as long as you don't let him use the Optic Blast. Beast is the easiest to beat since he's so slow and can be hit with the triple card throw easily. Wolverine may have speed on his side, but if you can get as much distance between him and you as possible, he'll still go down easily via the triple card throw. He's also easy to get a full standing combo on, surprisingly.

Psylocke Path

When you start this stage, a crosshairs will be following you. Use your speed as well as the cover in the foreground to keep from being hit with a huge laser. If the crosshairs is pink, it's about to fire.

You'll find the free life in the crosshairs segment. It'll be in the upper-right hand corner of the path before you turn left.

You'll take on the Acolytes in groups of three, but at least the crosshairs stop following you at this point.

Exodus is the most easily beatable with Psylocke. You'll have Acolytes dogging you during this battle, but here's a nasty trick you can pull off. Hit Exodus with a kick, then when he returns to his neutral position, hit him with the Psychic Knife before he teleports offscreen. He'll be cut to ribbons before he or the other enemies can do any significant damage.

You'll quickly take on the real boss: a rocketship. As the rocket goes up, make your way to the right side of the screen and stay away from the exhaust jets. Do all but the drop kick from the full standing combo and use the Neck Breaker to make your way up to the higher platforms. As long as you don't make any mistakes, you'll be fine.

Cyclops Path

This one's a pain in the butt. You can get rid of the Acolytes with the Optic Blast, but the real danger to deal with is the moving platforms. You'll have to use these to make it to the end, and Cyclops isn't exactly the fastest character in the game.

You'll find an extra life on one of the platforms after that robot. Just take it down to the lower-right corner of the path and you'll find it in a large nook in the wall.

One of the platforms will take you to the free life. I believe it is the one immediately before the fight with Exodus. Just take it to the lower right and  which is actually quite simple: just jump kick him and use your full standing combo after he hits the ground.

The final boss here is a sphere surrounded by revolving shields that shoots out balls of electricity. Take out the shields - and the sphere - with Optic Blasts, and avoid the electric balls whenever they come at you. If you can leave at least one of the shields up, this can make it easier.

Wolverine Path

You'll be climbing up a huge set of walls, which is what Wolverine does best. At the same time, you'll be dealing with Acolytes as well as two cannons at the bottom that shoot out beams of light. These light beams won't hurt you, but the huge purple fireballs that quickly dart upwards right after that willIf the Acolytes happen to be dumb enough to float in the path of the fireballs, they're getting hit. (thanks Norrin Radd II Turbo)

There'll be some more climbing after that, but you won't have to deal with fireballs anymore. You'll then fight Exodus...
